Style Rewind: The 90s Are Back!
90s style revival

If the 90s was, among others, a ‘decade that fashion forgot,’ it seems that fashion is regaining its memory and embracing the time of plaid, micro florals, tie dye, high waist denim and cropped tops. Clarification needs to be made, however: this is not about the Ginger Spice body-con union jack dress wasting away in the depths of your closet; it’s about revitalizing 90s grunge with modern street style polish.

In the early 90s, we had Clarissa on hand to explain it all. These days, we can look to modern fashionistas and designers to guide us. Here are three ways the 90s trend is being put to good use, and how you can harness it too.

Discard the memories of sweaty school days brought up by tying outerwear around your waist – this is a refined update, courtesy of blogger Leandra Medine, aka The Man Repeller. Her outfit showcases a stylish way of wearing a 90s-inspired black slip dress while giving it some shape at the waist and throwing in plaid at the same time – a simple ensemble hitting all the right notes. Aussie label Evil Twin’s latest lookbook – shot by Jason Henley and entitled ‘Lucid Dreaming’ – is practically a postcard from a dreamy 90s beach summer, with kitschy yin and yang prints, tie dye, relaxed tailoring, and an impeccably-styled model in outrageous chunky platforms and layered bracelets.(See images 2 and 3).

The spring 2013 runways weren’t shy of grungy 90s nostalgia either, with especially striking results at 3.1 Phillip Lim and House of Holland. Key styling tips that can be taken from two of fashion’s hippest men are: embrace slouchy layers, mix prints, and don’t be afraid of overalls (really!) (See images 4 and 5).

Now it’s your turn: (See images – 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10).
