Here at Missy we have a number of delicate flowers on staff, all claiming to have sensitive skin. Then there are those of us with super-sensitive skin. The kind that enflames and reddens in reaction to the wrong skin care products, be it from too much perfume, or a mystery chemical, or simply because the texture is wrong. Sound familiar?
So we were super interested to try the La Roche-Posay range of products for sensitive skin. This range has been formulated to work with dermatological treatments for people with seriously reactive skin. Would it be sensitive enough for this delicate flower?
We had 3 products to try:
1) La Roche-Posay Laboratoire Dermatologique Dermo Cleanser.
The first thing I always do when looking at a new skin product is smell it. I can tell in one whiff if a product is too heavily perfumed and will likely give me a reaction. But when I popped the top on this baby, hallelujah! Nothing! Nada! This is as truly fragrance free as I’ve ever seen (or rather, smelled).
Next, the texture: milky and light, smooth and spreads widely so you only need a fraction of what you would use with a thicker cream. Additionally, the thinness of the fluid and the fact it is safe for eyes, means I can rub it over my eyelids with my fingertips instead of wasting a lot of product on a cotton pad. It also means I can just use one product instead of a separate eye makeup remover - which are incidentally, often oily and irritating to the eyes.
The result: the skin is left smooth and clean and all traces of the blush, powder, concealer, eyeshadow and mascara I was wearing are gone. And it didn’t require a whole lot of rubbing or dragging tissues over my face. I’m pretty happy about that.
2) La Roche-Posay Laboratoire Dermatologique Toleriane Ultra (Intense Soothing Care)
Again, very little scent so no rashes! This comes in a pump pack meaning you don’t waste the product by taking out too much. Two to three pumps would be enough to do the entire face and neck. This cream is of medium thickness, but glides on smoothly and I don’t feel like it’s clogging my pores.
The result: After just a minute or two, the surface feels smooth and almost dry. The sensation is similar to using a primer and I certainly don’t feel like I have a thick layer of sludge as I sometimes do with other heavy duty moisturisers. This would be suitable to use under makeup and if you have a speedy morning routine like I do, this helps a lot!
3) La Roche-Posay Laboratoire Dermatologique Anthelios XL (Extreme Fluid)
This is a whopping 50+ sun protection rated cream so that’s a huge bonus! Paleness and skin sensitivity often go together and I’ve had to be very choosy over the years about what sunscreens I can use. This one is perfume and paraben free, glides on like a dream, and settles to almost dry in a minute or so.
The result: This is also a very thin cream so it can sit on top of the moisturiser and under makeup without creating that doughy, sticky feeling. And with 50+ going on, I can feel safe that I won’t get incidental sun exposure as I go about my day. And we know what that adds up to: less wrinkles.
I’m often left red faced after cleansing and moisturising, meaning that if I’m reapplying makeup for a night out after work, I have to wear more than I would like to cover that redness. With an extra gentle cleansing and moisturising routine like this, I can go subtle which is much more flattering, especially as one gets older. Less is more as they say! The high sun protection factor, combined with the non-stickness in the sunscreen is something I’m always looking for so pleased to have discovered this!
Seriously going to stick with this range, such a relief not to get the redness, the dryness or the face like a buffed-bowling-ball feeling!
