2013 was a controversial year in the world of makeup. January Jones got tongues wagging at the Met Gala back in May with her punk-inspired sharp eyeliner; Lena Dunham inspired a similar response with her standout emerald eyeshadow at the Emmy Awards in September. These looks were not certainly not chocolate-box pretty - they were much, much more interesting!

Amanda Seyfried went refreshingly au naturel with barely-there makeup while Jessica Alba matched her coral gown with a vibrant tropical orange lip at the Golden Globes. Emma Stone also rejected the standard red lip and went for a coral hue this year too.

But possibly the biggest beauty H-bomb of the year was the return of the bushy brow - Cara Delevigne earned scores of imitators with her barely-tamed forehead caterpillars (lol).
