For a long time, I didn't use toner, I thought it was an unnecessary step. But as I've got older, I realise that with exposure to the elements, regular use of makeup and the effect of hot showers, a good toner prepares the skin and creates the right surface for your moisturiser to really do it's work.

1. People For Plants Mist Toner, $19.95

This toner makes it so easy for you, once out of the shower use a pump or two to release the mist over your face and let the rose otto, burdock, Kakadu plum and antioxidants work their magic; You'll feel energised, hydrated, refreshed and soothed. I love any toner that's in a spray bottle, so you don't have to mess around with face pads! Get it from peopleforplants.com.au.

2. Kiehl's Whitening Toner, $38

This toner contains active ingredients to retexturise the skin, as well as hydrate and soften. When used regularly the skin appears brighter! Get it from Myer stores nationally.

3. Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense - Deluxe Edition $69.

This is a very gentle toner, suitable for sensitive skin. Potent rose extracts, aloe vera, marshmallow root extract and other botanicals hydrate, soothe, protect, rebalance and calm whilst enlivening the senses with the most beautiful scent! Another spray toner that looks stunning on your vanity! Get it from jurlique.com.au.

4. Garnier Pore Purifying Astringent, $8.99

This one is excellent for very oily, blemish prone skin that has visible pores. The salicylic acid in this toner means that it really purifies and tightens the pores, leaving a matte finish, perfect for  following with a light oil-free moisturiser. Because of it's poten ingredient, however, it’s not suitable for very sensitive skin. Use a little on a pad and swipe over the affected areas. You can dilute it by dampening the pad first if you only want a very light toning effect. It leaves a nice clean feeling. And the best thing about this is it's inexpensive and readily available, including in supermarkets. Find in priceline.com.au

5. Shiseido Eudermine Toner, $95

This one is more pricey but is of very high quality. Using this product dramatically hydrates and balances out skin issues; no more dry patches! Smells divine and with continued use, this product can work on keeping the skins moisture level constant so it doesn't get stressed under seasonal changes! Of course, the bottle looks beautiful on your vanity too. Available from Myer Stores nationally.
