Where would we be without the eyeliner? It’s the magic ingredient in our smoky eye look. The secret to bright eyes after a big night out. The easiest way to change your eye shape without a trip to the surgeon.

Lets face it; the humble eyeliner has come through for us time after time. In honour of this hard working member of the makeup world, we set out to review some of the best products on the market for your reading pleasure.

But we stumbled on a little surprise – the all-important step between eyeshadow and mascara has grown up since we saw it last. All of a sudden, we are brandishing brushes, eyeliner sealer, double ended contrast pencils and innovative pens to apply a little tipple of liner. Thankfully, the trusty eye pencil still exists! And we are still practicing our liquid liner technique.

The secret to finding the product for you? A little trial and error and a whole lot of fun. Transform yourself from bright eyed to vampy with a few well chosen strokes. Read up on our trusty tips and tricks for lining up a brand new look, and then check out the results of our roadtest.

1. Eyeliner can be used to add the dramatic touch to your face or soften the look of your eyes. When applying liner, keep the colour of your eyes and the eyeshadow that you have used in mind. For example, use a brown eyeliner with amber shades of eyeshadow.
2. Apply eyeliner as close a possible to your lash line to avoid that strange white line that can appear when the liner and the lashes don’t connect.
3. The eye pencil is a versatile eye defining tool, but a gentle touch is required. Start softly, and blend each layer back if it becomes a little heavy. When using an eye pencil, open your mouth slightly to relax the eye muscles. It will make lining a lot easier without having to pull or tug at your lid. Purchase a quality pencil with some smudging power for a sexy look.
4. Always sharpen your pencils before you use them.
5. The liquids require a steady hand, but they produce glamorous and dramatic results when you get the hang of it – practice, practice, practice. Liquids can be applied over top of your eye pencil for added intensity, or used under eyeshadow to enhance your eye shape. Both of these techniques ensure long wearing eye liner.

6. Gels and crèmes are the latest and greatest – make the most of them! The applicator brushes are super easy to use, and we love the gentle touch of the brush that beats the typical pencil – no dragging or tugging at your delicate skin here. 7. Don’t forget about the handy white and cream eyeliners – added simply to the inner line on your bottom lid (this can take a little practice for ticklish folk), these shades are perfect for enhancing the whites of your eyes and making you appear well rested, even if you missed a few of your 8 hours.
8. Colours are not just limited to black, brown, green and blue. Experiment, and make the most of the hottest new shades to hit stores – violets, plums, ambers, gold and silver, or try your usual shades revamped with an extra touch of sparkle.

Designer Brands Fine Eyeliner in Black

A great product easy on the hip pocket.

An extra long applicator brush is the kicker in the Designer Brands liquid, making application too easy. This product provides a good solid line and a rich colour. Fine Eyeliner includes all natural ingredients including Aloe Vera and Vitamin E, so it is kind to your skin, but can tend to flake a little during wear.

How to Apply - Leave a little liquid on the brush and draw a steady line on your top lid on the lash line.
Ease of Application - The long brush allows you to get more area with less effort.
Depth and vividness of colour –Provides a rich, dark colour.

Shiseido ‘The Makeup’ Fine Eyeliner in Black

A fabulously unique liner that provides the perfect line

A personal pick out the liquids, this refillable liquid eyeliner pen makes bold lines super easy to draw, with a really natural finish and no smudging what so ever. Shiseido’s eyeliner is one smartie – it has a mechanism that allows you to control the type of line you draw at the push of a button. With a normally shaky hand, I was able to draw a perfect line with no fuss. If you are after a deeper colour, just give the button at the rear of the pen another push.

How to Apply – Assembling the wand can be a little challenging. Unscrew the cap off the pen, and unscrew the applicator from the base. Insert the liquid capsule with the narrow end up, and the push the applicator firmly back into the pen (this is where my attempt went awry). Give the button a few pushes and presto!
Ease of Application -It really is too easy – The brush is designed so well you can’t go wrong. Depth and vividness of colour– You may need a couple of coatings if you are striving for a really dramatic eye.
How long did this product last for?– As long as you wish, but its super easy to wash off – no panda eyes in the morning.

Max Factor Line Maker in Rich Black

Precision application made easy

Delicate and natural lines are easy with this handy little liquid. The colour is lovely and rich, with no flake factor at all. The package is also handbag proof, the catch on the lid will prevent it from applying the liquid to the interior of your clutch. A great product for a bargain price.

How to Apply- Careful application is needed here, the Line Maker is wonderful for applying a delicate line to your upper eyelid. Go over the line again for a stronger effect.
Ease of Application – With any liquid, have a few goes first before applying over your eyeshadow – then there is no going back.
Depth and vividness of colour– Great colour, a really vivid black that makes your lash line look oh so sexy.
How long did this product last for?– This one is a stayer, just try not to smudge if you have applied a stronger line

Introducing: the Cremes and the Gels

Proof Onyx Density Liner

Soft on application, strong on looks.

Being a lazy pencil eyeliner kind of girl, I’m now persuaded that this luxe and creamy liner is superior to my kohl pencils. Okay, so you need to apply with a narrow brush, but the benefits are you are gentler on the delicate eyelids, and you get a rich coverage which lasts.

How to Apply - Using a narrow pointed brush, dip in colour, then stroke along the eye lid.
Ease of Application- Easy with a good narrow brush

Melli Cosmetics Indelible Gel Eyeliner in Magnetism

Indelible and incredible.

Straight from the professional’s cosmetic kit, the gel eyeliner from Melli Cosmetics is the product for a waterproof line with a sexy sparkle. And it is waterproof – a good splash with the old H2O proved this quite sufficiently. This gel is fabulous for providing a good strong line everytime, and we love the rich formula for a gentle application. Use the brush to give a thin and clean line, or try a smoky and bold effect.

How to Apply – Pick up your applicator brush (we recommend a good quality angle brush or sable brush), dip into the colour pot and apply a little colour. Wipe off excess colour on your hand and apply carefully to your lash lines on the upper and lower lids (go easy on the lower lid, gel can look a little heavy - a slight smudgy line for definition is perfect here.)
Ease of Application - Using a brush for the application of eyeliner is super easy – not much practice is required, and the best look of a gel eyeliner is smudgy – I certainly take advantage of that.
Depth and vividness of colour- A lovely rich colour with an extra dash of sparkle.

Napoleon China Doll Eyeliner in Heaven (Dark Blue)

A shade to die for.

This luxe formula glides on effortlessly with a small tipped brush. Hypoallergenic and long lasting, the gel texture defines the eye line perfectly and brings out colours in my eyes I never knew were there. China Doll is quick and easy to apply, great for everyday use and the darker colours double as brilliant brow shapers. It is quick setting and long lasting.

How to Apply - Dip your brush into the colour pot and apply liberally to your upper lids and lower lids – Heaven looks fantastic carefully applied on the lower lids with lashings of mascara.
Ease of Application – Love the deep blue of this colour and the way it appears on the eye.
Depth and vividness of colour– I loved the depth and vibrance of this colour, and the sexy effect it creates on the eye.
How long did this product last for? Very long lasting.

Have a play with these versatile colours.

After so many sophisticated and dramatic looks, it was time for a little fun. Covergirl’s Eyeslicks are a great addition to your eyeliner collection to play up your eyes with bright colour and different effects. Widen the appearance of your eyes with the sexy silver in the tear ducts and on you lower lid, or set off a gorgeous shade of plum eyeshadow with the funky purple freeze.

Shiseido 'The Makeup' Eyeliner pencil duo in Desert Dusk

A Missy favourite – a product that works hard for us.

What more could you want? Shiseido’s two-tone eyeliner and highlighter is in our favourite shades for winter and works doubly hard for our money. On one end you will find the darker eyeliner colour in a rich dark brown, great for defining and thickening the upper lash line, and on the other end find the shimmery gold colour, perfect for highlighting the shape of your eyes. Working in unison, this super duo works fabulously with sexy amber eyeshadow and glossy nude lips.

How to Apply – As mentioned above, use the darker colour to gently define your upper lash line and the outers of your lower lash line. Blend this lower line in towards your tear duct with the highlighter.
Ease of Application - To get a complete and defined look, take time and take care.
Depth and vividness of colour– Use short feathery strokes with the dark colour on you upper lash line until you achieve the desired depth of colour. The gold is gorgeous and adds light to your eyes.

The Perfect Blend pencil provides just that – Draw your line carefully on your upper lid, and then flip the pencil and use the handy sponge as a blending tool – no brush required. A very handy all in one pencil we would take everywhere for on the spot application or touch ups.

How to Apply – Line your eye with the lovely rich brown, and then uncap the sponge smudger on the other side – you can either blend back harsh lines or create that sexy smudgy effect.
Ease of Application – The pencil can drag a little, just make sure it is super sharp and you hold your eyelid taut.
Depth and vividness of colour – Nice and rich, provides a really nice deep brown when smudged.
