Designer DETAIL - Sara Phillips

Only three seasons old, Sara Phillips self-titled label is certainly one to watch. Phillips has successfully combined her fresh, feminine sense of design with a quirky edge and introduced a striking new label to the market.

A graduate of the prestigious East Sydney Fashion Design Studio run by Nicholas Huxley, Phillips launched the debut collection for her label titled 'Knit one Purl one' in November of 2007 at the Carriageworks in Sydney.

Prior to launching her own label, Phillips already had an impressive CV, having worked with large Australian fashion houses such as Jayson Brunsdon, Saba and the Apparel Group.

Phillips made the decision to start her own label while studying. The young Sydneysider always wanted to have her own business and after gaining invaluable industry experience, it was time to venture out on her own.

After the success of her first two collections, Phillips has followed up with a beautiful, fresh and feminine Autumn Winter '09 collection that has a February '09 in store delivery date that is well worth anticipating.

'Come Fly with Me' is inspired by all things in flight. From birds of a feather to planes in motion, Phillips' collection captures the essence of flying through garments that are willowy, earthy and natural, and sees the label develop into something mature and sophisticated in just two short seasons.

Light-hearted and fresh, yet mature and sophisticated, the range has a rich colour palette of plum, grey and khaki, giving it a warm and luxurious feel.

As Phillips states, "All the garments are light and floaty, representing flying and movement".

Silk twill, organza, velvet and jerseys create a simple aesthetic for the collection, which also features prints that are original artworks, copyrighted to Sara Phillips. Shapes and silhouettes are striking, with high-waisted shorts and exaggerated bell sleeves.

Sheer is a dominant feature of the collection, as seen in the beautiful Alice skirt and Swooping shirt in grey. Teamed with a stunning organic feather design, these pieces are must-haves for the coming winter.

Other highlight pieces include the Dove smock with a poncho-like feel that alludes to a bird's wingspan. The feather jackets in black and grey are versatile pieces that can be worn over pants and dresses.

Phillips' bird inspiration is felt in every piece in the collection, which features names such as Mockingbird, Parrot, Finch and Rosella. Also accompanying the range is a selection of gorgeous feather headbands available in thin and wide styles, in lilac, purple and black.
