CULL, AND THEN CULL SOME MORE

De-cluttering is a pain, but boy does it make a space feel fresh! If something in your room doesn’t serve a practical purpose, or if you’re not Ryan Gosling levels in love with it, get rid of it.

SORT YOUR WARDROBE OUT

While you’re at it, donate or sell your threads that haven’t been worn in over a year. Place the rest of your clothes on wooden hangers for a cheap and easy way to make things appear more organised than they are – particularly if you don’t have the luxury of a built-in wardrobe and your clothes are on display.

CONSIDER A FEATURE WALL

Painting a feature wall in your bedroom is a simple way to instantly update the vibe of your space. Go for calming and slightly darker hues (shades of bluey-grey are good) over anything too bright to create a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere.

REARRANGE YOUR FURNITURE

If painting is not an option (damn you, pesky landlords!), an easy way to trick your mind into thinking it’s in a completely new space is by rearranging your furniture. If your room is too small to mix things up, sanding back your existing drawers or desk and re-staining or painting it a new colour is another way to go.

GET THE LIGHTING RIGHT

Overhead lighting is the pits. I much prefer the gentle lighting of lamps, and by placing them in areas you want to highlight (to show off your fancy wares or to actually help you see), your space will feel oh-so warm and inviting.

DON’T FORGET THE FLOOR

A statement rug will take your room to interior magazine worthy heights. Go for big, bold and beautiful, and don’t be afraid to layer a couple of rugs of different sizes for an even more interesting and textured look.

BEAUTIFY YOUR BED

This is without a doubt the most important point on this list. Beautiful sheets and doona covers are sent directly from heaven, HEAVEN I tell you, and they will make your room look and feel a thousand times better. Splurge a little and invest in some quality linen in gorgeous colours that will not date quickly (greys, navy, neutrals, and whites) and add a pop of colour with some cushions or throws.
