You're the Real Thing Baby

Much has been said about the fundamental differences between the two types of designer bag lady out there - the real versus the fake.

Yummy Mummies in the Park.

Have you ever noticed that Yummy Mummies are all starting to look the same? It seems to me that the schoolyard is no longer the place to be cool, its now the play-yard.

Romper Stomper.

So I’m sitting here at my laptop on a cold, rainy weekday looking out the window at the poor people struggling past me in wet weather gear, umbrellas and ruined shoes thanking the powers that be that I didn’t have to get out of my jammies today.

Although, you have to ask yourself one question, would I answer the door to a courier wearing this outfit. If the answer is no – and in my case it’s a very emphatic NO! then its time to clean out the pajama / around the house draw and grab some groovy basics.

Vintage fashion is here to stay.

I truly believe the fascination we have with vintage fashion comes from a desire to return to a time where ladylike dressing was the rule not the exception. With couture classics selling for more than ever in stores and on Ebay and celebrities clamoring for vintage gowns to set them apart on the red carpet it’s a phase of fashion I don’t see ending soon.

Sail Away With Me Hunny.

After heading off to Jervis Bay every second weekend in summer for the past 10 years I have learnt the hard way. We started with a boot full of junk we never used and have now finely tuned our gear into one bag, one beach bag and one booze esky.

Here’s how.

An Ode to the Maxi Dress.

I love a good maxi dress, have been wearing them for years. Born into a family without the best legs, they been my saving grace on many an occasion. I do worry about my daughter though as I pass on the family curse, although to look on the bright side I do have a smaller than usual waist…….

Angels and Devils – The Right and Wrong Way to Dress for Fancy Dress.

Have you ever been invited to one of those fancy dress parties where you aren’t good friends with the hosts and are not sure just how dressed up you should be?

So what is the correct protocol? How do you stand out from the crowd without wishing you had emptied a stiff drink first…..

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

Since when did swimwear get so flimsy?

It seems the impossible has happened and all of a sudden the bikini is for good and bad days and the one piece well that’s fallen into the realms of a lucky few. And I'm not talking about your safe black halterneck low cut togs from Target, I’m talking about the Cutout.

Worn Once, Will Sell!

I recently discovered the joys of selling online. I have always been a fan of Ebay of course but it was the buying I was obsessed with.

I went to my friend for an advice. A seasoned Ebayer who had just done an annual cleanout she had all the hints and tips for selling clothing and making serious money. Now that everything I own is sold, I can pass some of these tips to you.

The Baby Boom.

Is it just me or have kids clothes never been so cute? Maybe I have never looked before, buying a little designer outfit for a friend who’s expecting is a little different to setting up a wardrobe for your own little bun in the oven.

I accompanied a friend to Castle Towers last week for some fast Friday night fashion. Normally a very cautious investment dresser I was suddenly overtaken by the urge to splurge. I felt the need for speed, I wanted to shop til I dropped.

With the stop on racing it might be preemptive to start thinking about fashions on the field but I say better prepared for a non event than not prepared at all!
With the weather caressing us with the gentle breeze of spring its time to banish all black and starting thinking about our spring racing wardrobe.

I love Paris in the Springtime…

After watching Livinia Nixon skip round Paris in Nines “Try Before You Die” series and drooling over her red and white polka dot dress, I thought to myself goodness gracious! What would I do if some lovely person dropped a ticket to Paris into my back pocket, my wardrobe just isn’t up to scratch!

Fat Clothes

Fashion is Art is Fashion

21th century fashion has often walked a fine line between fashion and art. The certainty that designers are artist is of course accepted. But what of wearer as artist? For years we have watched bemused as the lines between what is fashion and what is art have blurred.

Pretty in.... Posh?

When did it become a fashion de rejour to follow to the letter the style foibles of the Hollywood brat pack?

I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that the sight of bleary eyed, wandering starlets emerging from a club at 3am with the details of their outfits splashed across the fashion pages of teen magazines is enough to put me off my weeties.

Let the Sun Shine In.

It’s official. This is the coldest winter EVER! Never before have I suffered such chilling shivers. The longing for sun is made worse by being on the wrong side of the equator and seeing Eva Longaria sunning herself in Saint Tropez - and Nicole Ritchie sauntering around in a strapless maxi dress and thongs...

A Growing Concern.

In my mind there are two types of pregnant women. The lucky few aka Heidi Klum who sport a perfectly formed baby bump that doesn’t show until the twentieth week, when you are half way to the finish line and just need a few cute singlets to cover the gorgeous thing. And then there is the second category, the women who start expanding from week five.

Its What’s Inside That Counts.

If clear tote bags are the look du jour for the spring summer season appearing on the catwalks of everyone from Louis Vuitton, Oscar de la Renta and Kate Spade, someone needs to put some thought into what goes inside.

Risky Business.

There are many excuses to raid your boys wardrobe this coming season with shapes getting more and more oversized and man inspired.

The new look for spring is the shirt-as-dress. With a nod to the eighties this look is clean cut, crisp and can be ultra flattering to the legs.

Always take the weather with you.

Why is it that by the time you can actually wear a trend you are so sick to death of seeing it in the shops that you don’t want to be caught dead wearing it?

When does a trend go too far, and how do we know when its time to jump off the bandwagon before we become more Best & Less than just plain Best?

Full Sale Ahead.

It’s been three years since my last sample sale.

Out into the cold and tormenting rain I naively ventured a thought that surely we would be the only ones crazy enough to line up in a dark stairwell awaiting that moment when the doors suddenly open and all hell breaks loose?

The Loss of Elegance.

I attended a charity ball last Saturday night, and while this should conjure up illusions of grandeur, glittering men and women swathed in silk and sequins coquettishly batting their eyes and battling for attention, I am sorry to say, it wasn’t quite the case. What has happened to dress standards?

When it's time to go...

Believe me when I tell you, I have been inside some pretty crazy wardrobes in my time but this week I cracked the jackpot. Wednesday I attended to the cupboard of a self confessed hoarder. Now when clients tell me this I smile and assure them it can’t be as bad as they think. And it normally isn’t. Until now. This was the wardrobe that kept on giving.

Knit One, Pill None.

A client recently revealed the inside of her hall cupboard for me to see. It was overflowing with her collection of knitwear. She wasn’t a wool addict, or a mad fetishist, her only mistake was hanging out with the wrong type. The wrong type of knit that is. The "pilling" type.

Leggings and tights and all things nice.

Word on the street is that the eighties are back, and it seems, here to stay a while. With the return of the hubba bubba bubble skirt, metallics, stonewash skinny jeans and everyone from fashion students to yummy mummies wearing oversized jumpers over leggings, is it really time to reintroduce “Choose Life” tees (thank-you Katherine Hamnett) into our wardrobe again?

The End of the Line for the Humble Slingback?

I’ve always suffered from an unshapely ankle, so of all pointy toes, I find slingbacks the best way to combat the dreaded cankle. The thin strap gives the illusion of thin ankles while the pointy toe brings the leg to a shapely point. I’ve never been a fan of the round toe, it seems so abrupt for those of us who don’t have calves to die for.

Create your best Investment Wardrobe.

Building a foolproof wardrobe is easy; all you need to do is to remember the right ratios. No, it isn’t a math’s class, it’s fashion…

A perfect wardrobe should be made up of 60% Investment pieces 20% Basics and 20% Trend. Stylists use this rule when shopping for clients.

Use this simple rule when shopping. Coco Chanel wisely once said “buy less, spend more”.
