We all follow them; the Instagram-famous models and bloggers who appear to be living a perfect life.

They are fit, beautiful and always happy but is that really the case?

Instagram star, 18-year-old Essena O'Neill from the Sunshine Coast, has more than half a million followers on Instagram, all addicted to her perfect life.

But while we all thought her life was perfect, sadly things were not as they seemed...

The Insta-famous babe is completely over pretending that her life is as perfect as they come and is now telling it how it is.

"Without realising, I've spent majority of my teenage life being addicted to social media, social approval, social status and my physical appearance. Social media, especially how I used it, isn't real," she wrote.

"It's a system based on social approval, likes, validation in views, success in followers. It's perfectly orchestrated self absorbed judgement. Social media allowed me to profit off deluding people."

The teenager deleted thousands of her photos this week and has changed the captions on her remaining photos; letting her followers know what was 'really' going on behind the photo.

"Please like this photo, I put on makeup, curled my hair, tight dress, big uncomfortable jewellery," she wrote in a caption. "Took over 50 shots until I got one I thought you might like, then I edited this one selfie for ages on several apps - just so I could feel some social approval from you."

She went as far as to say that she was lying to her followers with her photos and admitted that she was paid thousands of dollars to wear some of the clothes she was pictured in.

"Was paid $400 to post a dress. That's when I had maybe 150k followers, with half a million followers, I know of many online brands (with big budgets) that pay up to $2000 per post," she wrote.

"I just think it should be known. This photo had no substance, it was not of ethical manufacturing (I was uneducated at the time). SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT REAL is my point. Be aware what people promote, ask yourself, what's their intention behind the photo?"

While we all had a feeling this was the case (let's be honest, her life did look too good to be true), it is still refreshing to hear someone tell it like it is.

Essena has launched a new website designed to tell the truth about her social media journey: www.letsbegamechangers.com/videos
