The Academy Awards: it’s a glittering event that’s just as famous for the frocks as the films. Every year, fashion lovers around the world wait with bated breath for the stars of the silver screen to arrive in all their finery. Who will win a coveted spot on the best-dressed lists, and who will commit a crime against red-carpet fashion?

As the pinnacle of the awards season, expectations were high leading up to Hollywood’s night of nights for 2013, and we weren’t disappointed. Glittering jewels and dresses, soft neutral shades and figure-hugging silhouettes ruled this year, with dashes of moody blue, fiery red, classic black, and the odd full and flouncy skirt thrown in for good measure.

Yes, it was all very refined and civilised this year – there were no wardrobe malfunctions, scandalous thigh-high leg splits (well, not many anyway) or ill-fitting ensembles in sight. Is it bad to admit that we’re a tad disappointed?

When it comes to screen queens who shone on Oscars night, we can’t go past this fabulous five: Charlize Theron, Adele, Jessica Chastain, and our very own Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman.
