It’s always good to see creative types getting together and watching the sparks fly! So it was with great interest that we learned of the collaboration between innovative design-it-yourself shoe company, Shoes of Prey, and one of the most exciting and creative design teams to emerge from the Australian fashion scene in recent years – Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett from Romance Was Born.
Sales and Plunkett wowed us last year with their Summer collection called Berserkergang that had an action cartoon theme, so we were intrigued to see what they would come up with for 2013 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
The Romance Was Born team were sponsored by Disney and took inspiration for this collection from two of their most iconic films, Alice in Wonderland and Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. As you can see from the images, there is no shortage of strong colour as well as playful shapes including antennae, puffy sleeves, frills, bows and feathers. Inspiration for the extremities (shoes, hair and makeup) apparently came from 1960s model Peggy Moffitt. The whole psychedelic experience, (aptly named Mushroom Magic) was extended by the incredible set created by artist Pip & Pop.
But back to the shoes. Plunkett says “We worked really closely with the prints that we used in the garments this season so that the elements of the shoes matched, or in some cases highlighted the same patterns.
“The collection transitions from powdery pastels to strong pop colours and a bit of neon, and we wanted the shoes to cover that colour spectrum too. Like a psychedelic rainbow!”
Three of these designs are now available for purchase (and you can customise them too), just in time for the emerging trend in bridal wear for ditching the classic white, silver, satin and lace of traditional bridal shoes for bold pops of colour and perhaps some whacky Disney inspired frills.
