Are you fickle in your fashion affections? Don’t worry; we’ve been known to spread our sartorial love around, too. But while we’re all for having a brief flirtation with new-season fads, it’s important to have a committed relationship with a few trusty pieces that you won’t fall out of love with after just a few short months.

A chic collared Oxford-style shirt is the perfect example of a wardrobe essential that you’ll have a life-long love affair with, rather than an all-too-brief fling. Why? Because it’s just so damn versatile.

Whether your signature style is ladylike luxe or hipster cool, your body shape is curvy or lean, or you’re throwing together an outfit for the office or a picnic, this need-it-now number ticks all the right boxes. Every. Single. Time.

While button-downs in classic black or white are available pretty much all year round, expect to see lots of collared shirts in statement prints (like florals, stripes and checks, monochrome motifs and geometric patterns) and embellishments (such as bejewelled collars, cut-outs and bows) this season.

So, what’s the secret to finding a shirt that will get the tick of approval this spring, but hold its own against newer trends in the months/seasons/years to follow? The key is to look for one that’s on-trend but has timeless appeal. For example, investing in a floral or striped design – popular patterns that tend to stick around from season to season – is a much smarter option than hedging all your bets on a neon number, with strategically placed cut-outs and crystal-embellished collars. Shirts in classic black, white or neutral colourways, as well as casual chambray finds, are clever buys, too.

One of our fave picks in the spring shirt department this season is this stunner – COOP by Trelise Cooper’s Lady Norwood Rose ‘Elizabeth’ Shirt. We heart it so much that we decided to put together five ensembles that you can wear whether you’re at work or play.
