Plaid is by far the most popular type of check at the moment, but ladylike gingham, tartan, houndstooth and minimalist grid-like motifs are getting their fair share of the limelight, too. While these preppy patterns are mainly appearing in traditional check colourways like black, white, red and blue, we’re also seeing them in on-trend palettes (think pastels and jewel tones) and unexpected hues (like neons and metallics), giving them a fresh, up-to-date vibe.
Designers have also given checks a modern update by enlarging the pattern to epic proportions, mixing prints (personally, we love pairing them with less structured patterns like animal prints and florals), using modern silhouettes and adding embellishments (you know, grungy studs, sequins, sparkling gems, cut-outs and ruffles), resulting in checked pieces that are cool and chic, rather than schoolgirl-y in style.
Keen to try the trend (if you haven’t already)? Check out our edit of 20 checked pieces that you need to add to cart, now! Choose one item and pair with a block colour for a simple but stylish look, or team two or three contrasting checks together to make a bold statement.
