Yes, ladies, it’s that time of year again: the Spring Racing Carnival is finally here! While we do enjoy having a flutter at the races and soaking up the party-like atmosphere, one of the main reasons we love the spring racing season is because it gives us an excuse to get glammed up...and not-so-secretly size up what everyone else is wearing trackside.
Although each event on the spring racing calendar comes with its own dress code, there are several trends that will reign supreme, regardless of which race day you’re attending.
For the cutting-edge, contemporary dresser, sports luxe looks – think sporty shifts, racer-back styles, plus designs with cut-outs and sheer panels – are an obvious choice. Jumpsuits, trouser-blouse combos (or a bustier, topped with a blazer, if you’re feeling brave), and tailored frocks with asymmetrical hemlines or sculptural detailing (like oversized ruffles) are also proving popular.
Would you prefer to exude ladylike elegance on race day? Well, we bet that demure midi and knee-length dresses, 50s-inspired full skirted frocks and prim pencil skirts are going to be fashion favourites on the field. Feminine textures such as silk and lace, plus embellishments like peplums, draping, bows and beading are also en vogue this season.
In terms of colour, it’s all about monochrome (especially on Derby Day), block brights (cobalt, yellow, pinks, reds and orange, in particular) and pretty pastels this spring. Okay, there is one exception: navy is another hue that’s (surprisingly) hot, hot, hot this season, a fact that those who steer clear of stop-and-stare shades are sure to appreciate.
And who doesn’t love an eye-popping print? Anyone? Good, because there’s no escaping graphic, geometric and darling floral designs on the field this season.
Hunting for the perfect race-day dress(es) for the Spring Racing Carnival? Well, here are 20 frocks that will help you become a trackside style star!
Which one of these would you wear?
