Leather has long been a fashion favourite because of its luxe appeal and ability to add a bit of badass, boy-don’t-mess-with-me ‘tude to any outfit. But this season, designers have steered away from the vampy, tough-chick vibe – though not completely – and instead shown a softer, more versatile side of the smooth, buttery material, which has seen our love affair with leather spin out of control. And we’re not complaining!
Rewind to the unveiling of the autumn/winter collections last year, and the runways were awash with leather wearables with bold lines, clean silhouettes, a few feminine flourishes, and a sparse palette of inky blacks, moody greys, midnight blue, burgundy and neutral tones.
So, what are the hottest leather looks this season? This year, designers have been playing with textures, prints, embellishments, volume and colour, resulting in fresh leather finds that are more relaxed and grown-up in style. In short, they can be worn every day, rather than just every once in awhile.
On the colour front, prepare yourself for the unexpected; while ebony still reigns supreme, soft sorbet shades and electric tones are where it’s at this season. The same rule applies to shapes and styling: minimalism is out, while ladylike (think ruffles, peplums and pleats), sporty (jogging shorts and tracksuit pants are oh-so hot) and laidback pieces are in (afterall, who doesn’t love a form-flattering leather tank, shift dress or...a drop-crotch pant?).
Designers are also mix and matching materials, teaming leather with denim, tweed, lace and wool. Cool laser cut-outs, daring splits and asymmetrical hemlines are a few other things you should look out for this season, too.
If you want to indulge in a little leather love this winter but can’t make the investment just yet, don’t worry because there are plenty of faux leather pieces out there that are wallet-friendly and look and feel almost as good as the real thing. Winning!
