First dates can be stressful enough without the added pressure of finding the perfect outfit. To help you get there and to save you from falling into a crying heap in front of your wardrobe (may or may not be speaking from experience), let’s simplify.
First and foremost, consider the venue. Are you meeting at a bar, for coffee, going to a gig or are you one of those outdoorsy types heading rock-climbing? For all but one of those occasions (and can you guess which one?), here’s a rule to remember: Denim is your friend.
A snug-fit pair of jeans will see you through almost any date, especially during these cool-weather months. If you’re meeting during the day and want to make it casual, keep the jeans blue and choose a top that exemplifies your personal style. Bright and bubbly? Add a colourful knit or statement-print piece. More of a classic dresser? A crisp white shirt will do the trick. Or try a simple T-shirt and leather moto jacket combo with layered necklaces for an edgier off-duty-model look.
For a night time date, try wearing your denim up top. A chambray button-up with a pair of black leather pants screams cool and confident, or wear it with a white lace pencil skirt for an on-trend but more demure look.
If it’s an all-out date date, you know – fancy restaurant, cocktails, the lot – ditch the denim and scale things up a notch. Slip into a dress you love and feel comfortable in. You know you always look your best when you feel your best, and the last thing you want is to be sitting at a table pulling, adjusting and yanking on your ill-fitting frock.
Keep on you a compact mirror for a quick check of the dreaded pesto-in-the-teeth. And remember to have fun. The outfit will always play second fiddle to the conversation!
