Navy is here this spring! This dark hue has jumped from being a winter staple, into the spotlight of the spring collections. From mini shorts to elegant summer skirts, navy is everywhere. Lauren Conrad looks cute in navy shorts, while Nicole Kidman stays poised in a navy mini dress. But how? Wearing winter colours in spring can be tough, but this season Aussie designers have it covered.
Why choose navy in spring? Firstly, it’s a softer alternative to black. If you are fair, wearing the subtle brightness of deep blue navy doesn’t make such a startling contrast to your lighter winter skin quite as much as black. Brilliant! Secondly, navy always looks elegant. Going from beach to bar is tough, and loud lollipop colours of beach attire can look out of place. Navy’s subdued sexiness yields an inherent elegance whether it be through shorts, skirts, a playsuit or even a simple shoe.
So what pieces should you try? This spring, designers offer navy options from fun to formal, and beachy to black tie. If you’re absolutely loving navy blue, try a spring dress paired with silver or nude shoes to elevate the look. As the weather heats up, a navy and navy combo is ill-advised, as it can look overly heavy, hot and wintery. Try just one deep blue item, either top or skirt. Beautiful embellished tees in navy blue paired with a white skirt look flirty and fun, or navy shorts with a light coloured top or singlet. If you’re unsure on dark blue in the sun, opt for an accessory like navy shoes, sunnies or a clutch.
Don't forget, of course, that navy is the cornerstone of the evergreen nautical look, so rock a Breton top for classic styling.
Navy blue is for everyone in spring! Turn your back on seasonal colour stereotypes that put navy in the corner every spring. Embrace it!
