Let’s be honest. Winter fashion can sometimes seem a little staid after the fresh and flirty styles embraced by all during spring and summer: floaty fabrics make way for heavier, cold-combating materials, hemlines get longer, and sun-kissed shades are replaced with a richer, moodier palette.
But (thankfully) there’s no reason to fret about the state of your fashionable affairs this winter – and it’s all thanks to the statement print.
Punchy patterns have been dominating the runway for several seasons, so it’s no surprise that prints have once again taken prime position on the trends-to-try list this winter. Unlike the spring/summer incarnation of the statement print, this season sees the trend take on an edgier urban vibe, with pops of playfulness and vivid colour for extra attitude and character.
So, what types of prints are going to be popular this season? Basically, anything goes. Winter florals, graphic prints, geometric patterns, landscapes, tribal treatments, traditional checks and plaid, and quirky digital creations are all popping up in some shape or form.
If you’re new to the print-wearing game, keep it simple. Try wearing coordinating prints – like animal-print pants with matching accessories – or teaming a hero patterned piece with block basics.
However, if you’re brave and/or in the mood to experiment, there’s really only one thing to do: mix ‘n’ match your prints...and don’t hold back! Leopard print and thick stripes? Sure. Oversized blooms and playful polka dots? Done. Chic chevron and eye-catching landscape scenes? Most definitely.
For those thinking of going all out and rocking a print-on-print ensemble, the key to tying the whole ensemble together is to choose separates in the same or complementary tones.
