Word on the street is that the eighties are back, and it seems, here to stay a while.
With the return of the hubba bubba bubble skirt, metallics, stonewash skinny jeans and everyone from fashion students to yummy mummies wearing oversized jumpers over leggings, is it really time to reintroduce “Choose Life” tees (thank-you Katherine Hamnett) into our wardrobe again?
Finding my fashion feet during the (original) eighties has perhaps slowed my embrace of the black footless tights. But it was with a sense of abandon last week that I danced into Witchery and handed over 30 bucks for a pair of black leggings. Still under the flash dance influence, I hit Target for a pair of Madonna inspired, ankle length tights with lace detail at the ends, $17 and a pair of opaque footless tights $5.99. I figure if I’m going to embrace a trend, I may as well jump right in, leather slouchy boots and all.
After years of wearing nothing above my knees, it was time to brave the wide world with a pair of leggings, lightweight
Footloose and fancy free, I decided I couldn’t live without a black linen bubble skirt from
When does a trend become more fashion victim than fashion?
Sometimes a trend becomes a classic, and often not. But I do think leggings are here to stay a while. If you aren’t keen on the footless version try a pair of opaque stockings under everything teamed with patent ballet flats.
The three quarter legging must be a chain store invention - perhaps designed to save on the cost of Lycra? While full length leggings can be very flattering, there is really nothing right about cutting your leg off at the slimmest part, is there?

Where do i get that tshirt from in melbourne? x

Posted by: Neve at May 15th, 2007 10:50 pmI’m only in my mid thirties, and already every fashion era seems to have come around again. I remember living the 70’s fashion comeback in the 80’s, But this week I really wish I’d held onto my waisted belts from my 80’s ‘blue light’ disco days. As for the mod look, if only my mother had held onto those fabulous bell sleeve jackets. If only our wardrobes were bigger!
Posted by: Amanda at May 15th, 2007 10:54 pmNot a fan of those leggings.. really cant bring myself to do it.. I can’t believe you did Melanie! kidding
Posted by: Fran at May 16th, 2007 9:31 amI can’t do it! Footless tights will never darken my door, or legs. People my age ie over 25 just look sily in them - there, I’ve said it.
Posted by: Claire at May 16th, 2007 9:39 amfootless tights can be worn by over 25 y.o.Rather than shorten your leg try to wear the leggings higher around the lower calf to flatter ankle
Posted by: marg at May 17th, 2007 9:56 pmTights are perfect for pregnant women!! I have just discovered thatI can’t wear any pants to work, and I am not ready to buy any maternity stuff just yet (not even half term yet). but… black footless tights with a long jumper and flat shoes do the job every time… I am a bit over 30, but I do feel that I look good, even next to a tall leggy 21 year old
Posted by: Elina at May 18th, 2007 1:17 pmthe best feature of the footless tights fad is that it is worn under a loose long top. Consequently more shapes and sizes and ages can wear very comfortably as it hides a myriad of body problem spots. The main issue is selecting a dress or top over the leggings appropriate to your age!
Posted by: marg at May 22nd, 2007 10:56 pmAll this hopeless fashion trend does is make it right for the trackie brigade to lose the velour and resort back to daggy oversized tops and cheap leggings. It is not for everyone! Get your own sense of style for goodness sake!Sorry Elina it is perfect for pregnant women and thats about it!
