Strap on your metallic marching boots, it’s time for a fashion foray into the future. Some of the world’s most influential fashion houses are turning heavy metal, but it’s more ‘steeling’ beauty than Iron Maiden. Glaring silvers, iris-burning bronze and enough gold to satisfy Cleopatra are all recurring features in these latest collections.
Gucci seems to have entered The Twilight Zone with its spring/summer ‘07 range, which features a whole chapter on metallic heels, glinting dresses and silver capped booties - owch. D&G’s summer line has cyber-pop teen written all over it. Think Harajuku girl meets Teen Vogue princess in a metallic mini and silver bolero. Long the house of classic British style, Burberry has re-vamped its traditional stock by swapping plaid for platinum, (an attempt to distance itself from the ‘Chav Clan’ perhaps?). Burberry Prorsum ’07 includes silver print florals, while The Satorial Collection merges traditional monochrome accessories with glaring silver platforms and heavy metallic leather bags.
That’s not the end of it: Hogan, Jil Sander, Versace (no surprises there) and a league of other labels are making their mark in metal. But what’s your take on metal mania? White hot or molten rock? Have your say.

A silver bolero might look good in D&G’s promo but on the street it’d come off more red light than white hot…
Posted by: Alicia at May 25th, 2007 12:36 amI think that, like a lot of high end fashion designs, a lot of metallics look great on the catwalk, but fail to transcend into everyday life… That said, a little bit of bling goes a long way to spruice up an outfit.

Posted by: Alicia at May 28th, 2007 4:11 pmI have a conservative style, which, to some, might come across as boring. I don’t mind as that is my identity and I’m happy to stick with it as it is what makes me comfortable ergo confident as I move around. I think I’ve made a clever foray into the world of metallics, though, by using a shade of lipstick with a bit of bling and it’s actually quite flattering - gives the face a bit of light, especially in this dark, sombre weather. Another way is with the nail polish that I use - a bit of metal and shine doesn’t hurt.
