Fashion entertains love affairs with so many cultural forms - moonlighting in the art world, dabbling in music and of course, beaming itself onto the silver screen. But when it came to picking a favourite fashion film, Fashion Tragic had too many ‘must-sees’ for words. So we’ve narrowed it down to two ‘70’s Romance’.
Badlands (1973). If you haven’t seen this macabre film about hick romance gone wrong, then to Blockbuster with you. After her father is killed, naïve Holly (Sissy Spacek) and bad boyfriend Kit (Martin Sheen) take off across America on a killing spree. Throughout, Spacek’s collared shirts, billowing dresses, and high-waist jeans will have you craving blue skies and white cotton.
The Virgin Suicides (1999). Director Sofia Coppola is muse to one of the world’s most influential designers www.marcjacobs.com so it fits that her characters carry their own intoxicating style. The capped sleeves, prim shirts and soft nightgowns throughout The Virgin Suicides, infuse the five doomed Lisbon sisters with a tragic innocence that lingers off the screen and into our wardrobes.
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). This heavy thriller lags in parts, but is redeemed through costume. Reflecting the layered style of early 1900s, the
Appleyard College students also sport quaint nightgowns and underclothes especially popular during the ‘70s (when the film was made). Lead actress Anne-Louise Lambert may not have had a role to rival that of her debut, but the influence of her character’s style wavers on.

Posted by: rowie daskalakis at June 5th, 2007 9:17 pmI have just discovered (late I know!) the most amazing performance by Raquel Welch dressed in 1970’s super glamour (and Mae West dressed in swathes of black and white) as Myra Breckinridge [1970]. It’s a must see for the fabulous costume design, if not for the crazy plot.

Posted by: Emily at June 6th, 2007 9:59 amCliche I know, but Clueless had me in twin sets and houndstooth long before any of my high school friends knew the meaning of stylish.
Posted by: Lyn at June 6th, 2007 10:26 amThis film has pieces that fashion revived not too long ago eventhough it was set in the 60’s, watch Dirty Dancing again and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
Posted by: belinda at June 7th, 2007 1:40 amLiza Minelli as Sally Bowles in Cabaret is brilliant and looks amazing! Her on and off stage costumes just sensational! I remember as soon as I saw that movie I started painting my nails dark bottle green as well as my eyes!
