Fashion and animation have never entertained a strong love affair. We don’t watch Shrek or The Simpsons for style pointers do we? However, there is one digital artform with a sense of style within its fames that often transcends into 3D. All eyes to Anime…
There are few more beautiful men in the world than Howl of Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle. Too bad he’s Anime, (we’d have better luck wrestling Brad from Ange). Never the less, the title character’s tailored shirts, high-waist pants, flowing cloaks and peasant vests have got the pens on stylist’s little black books wagging. See Youth World and Nathan Smith for real world interpretations of Miyazaki’s magic.
Genre hopping space-western Anime series Cowboy BeBop tracks two bounty hunters across the galaxy in cyber style. With wide-shouldered blazers, slim fit shirts and skinny ties, main character Spike Spiegel puts most 3D men to shame. Follow his lead with Pour Homme and James Cameron. Spike’s nemesis-come-pal Faye Valentine might be seriously adventurous in the cleavage stakes, but her galactic wardrobe - vinyl pants, high collars and zippers - is being adopted by designers the world over. Get her look with Please Louise from Sydney boutique Capital L and a hint of Nom*D.
Would you take style tips from a cartoon? Or are animation and fashion worlds apart in your book? Let Tragic know.

It depends on the cartoon but as the pictures show above some cartoons do have style. So in this case I think I would, I like to find styles that are unique and look in various places for inspiration.
Posted by: Ali at July 31st, 2007 9:52 pmAhh Anime! Thanks guys, for letting the cat out! Now we “oh so cool” kids will have to find another obscure well to draw out eccentric uniqueness from, sigh….
Posted by: Catherine at August 1st, 2007 3:31 pmI’ve grown up with Anime all my life and I’ve got to admit, I’ve had a few crushes on some characters (yes, I know, I know…it’s a cartoon) Anyway, I’ve got to say, even though it’s a cartoon, it definitely got style. Looking around these days, teenagers are looking so glum/emo looking or…well pretty much identicle with their dressing. C’mon kids, get your imagination going and get some style - pity only the animated ones are looking damnnn good.
