Being more than a little obsessed with what celebs wear (it’s an occupational hazard, alright?) I do feel sorry for some starlets when they’re snapped looking less than amazing.

Bikini slips at the beach, dresses that turn sheer in a flashbulb frenzy and broken heels could happen to anyone. But some of looks those pretty young things throw together are no accident. They’re grade-A disasters.

Really, if you knew the paparazzi were waiting outside your front door wouldn’t you want to look more Kylie than Britney?

Kylie has both the style and sense to realise the snappers are lurking and uses her front walk as a runway to great effect, confirming her fashion-plate status in a Chanel halterneck with jeans one day an LBD and leopard-lined coat the next.

Britney meanwhile gets about in stained T-shirts, a leather biker jacket and bottom-baring shorts, white heels, sunglasses at night, sheer mesh tops and, well, you get the picture.

Let’s not even mention those times we have seen her without underwear or shoes. Or change into a bikini halfway through a night out. Or swap clothes with a friend. Or any other number of spectacular sartorial sins as evidenced by the 942,000 results Googling “Britney fashion disasters” attests. Oops.

But even when you’re not in danger of ending up in the gossip mags or PerezHilton.com, it pays to be paparazzi -ready when dashing out the door. Especially when you don’t expect to bump into anyone you know.

So, after a quick mirror check for obvious no-nos – that’s anything Kimberley Stewart, Brit-Brit or Brooke Hogan would wear – reach for these essentials.

* Giant sunnies – hide dark circles, a lack of eye make-up and wayward brows

* Headband – tames greasy locks or bed hair pronto

* Cute flats, decent bag (no, not a green recycling number) and scarf – reminds you, and others, you have some kind of style

After all, every girl has her own pseudo-paparazzi waiting to catch them out. They’re called ex-boyfriends.
