Last week we brought you a what-to-wear form guide of Australian Designers. This time all bets are on Australia’s stable of chain retailers.

Off and running with a collection that continues to push the boundaries is Herringbone celebrating ten years in fashion this year. You will come away well dressed with a matching outfit for him too. The thing I love about Herringbone is the fact that there is never a “colour of the season”; you won’t all be wearing indigo if you shop there. Choose from the one button white tuxedo, matched back with their solitaire print puff sleeve shirt and coral vest or their take on the 50’s pussy bow, generous in cut and fabric. Known for their shirtdresses this is one option that you will wear again and again.

Country Road, oft mentioned in this column has a few good options for race day. Reminiscent of Derby day are their linen smock dresses in black or cream so cute with over-sized hats and gloves. Their silk racerback dress in red is a great option with plenty of room for champagne and cocktails and many accessory options – just make ‘em bold.

Moving further down the chain with Esprit. I have been quite surprised by their range this season. Gone are the daggy drawstring tie linen pants and t-shirts replaced by a range that is full of French red, white and navy their stripy singlet a particular favourite. Not your average singlet, it has a ruffle detail that when matched with a white pleat skirt and flats will make for an elegant race day.

Wish, easily available in Myer always gives great frocks with the selection this season no exception – pretty prints worked in cotton with 50’s inspired shapes its hard to go wrong here.

The prize goes to the chainstores when it comes to accessories. The key is to select something that you can make your own with the right shoes, hat and jewellery. Chances are you won’t be the only one in that Portman’s wrap dress but if you accessorise correctly you will stand out from the crowd and take the fashion cup.
