In the past, Tragic has bemoaned the absence of Spanish label Zara from our fair shores. Sure, we could go to Bangkok or Singapore, but that’s a long way to travel for a winter coat. Finally, it’s time to cease our moaning. Zara is coming…
An article in the business section of last week’s Australian reported that Zara was on the move. Although no official opening date has been set, Westfield Shopping Centre’s Bondi Junction locale has been named as prime real estate. Tragic is already shaking with excitement in our Witchery boots.
For chic, business attire that works from day to night, Zara, like TopShop, knows how to translate the latest trends into affordable collections. Originally from Spain, the label has stores in more than 61 countries, and until now Australia has missed out. Cosmetics, menswear and kids clothes are also part of the Zara family, which (fingers crossed) will soon find its way Down Under. Tragic promises to keep you posted.
If you could bring an OS store, that’s ANY store to Australia, what would it be? Let Tragic know and you could win a double movie pass.

Zara would definitely need to open up in Chapel St or in the new St Kilda development
Posted by: Donna Zimbardi at September 18th, 2007 2:25 pmI would love to have Hennes & Mauritz come to Australia. It caters for the whole family. Stylish and affordable clothing which won’t cost a fortune. Not fair they have stores in U.S, Scandinavia and the U.K. We need one here.
Posted by: Connie Fantenberg at September 19th, 2007 7:58 amHow long does it take for people with $$ to know that they can make more $$ with Zara down under….. Zara i’m craving for you… How i long to see you once again. Let us not be appart any longer. Please come and be closer to me! You know we will then never depart.

Posted by: Maria Gerace at September 19th, 2007 9:00 amThis is absolutely fantastic news!!!! I’ve just come back from a 5 week holiday in Europe and Hong Kong and was lucky enough to stumble across my first Zara store in London. I basically bought that store out and then ended up buying out the ones in Athens and Hong Kong (IFC)! I actually wanted to look into opening one in Brizzy cause it’s just such a fantastic label. Can’t wait!

NOW THEY ARE ACTING ON MY REQUEST! Thanks for the info, i will email them now requesting some form of involvement, i am obsessed with this label!!!
Posted by: janan yenice at September 19th, 2007 9:36 amZara would be such a welcome addition to any city in Australia. Personally i’d love to see it in Sydney, with the same reasonable prices it has elsewhere in the world and the fabulous selection.

Zara has to open in Sydney, I know Melbourne has been the key spot for overseas brands, but Sydney NEEDS it, BEGS for it. I have purchased items from Zara before and I love the brand.
Posted by: Christina Alexopoulos at September 19th, 2007 10:09 amThis is the best news i have heard in a long time. I love Zara and often head to Spain to do a years worth of suit shopping!!! The other store i would love to see is an american store Bebe (www.bebe.com). They have the most amazing clothes and they have their own amazing sports line also. They don’t currently ship outside of the USA which is a real bummer.
Posted by: Natalie Thring at September 19th, 2007 10:10 amPlease, please let Zara come to Melbourne…I shopped at a Zara store whilst in Nice,France, it was so cheap, everything was stylish and beautiful and I always get comments when I wear the Zara jacket I bought! I wouldn’t need to shop anywhere else…
Posted by: Ros at September 19th, 2007 10:16 amI’M SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ………….. EXCITED . I’m spreading the news to all!I personally contacted Zara and ask if there was any chance of ever opening in australia which they sadly replied no to. But you have just made my shopping year. Can’t wait hope it’s soon.
Posted by: Yvette Karamanlis at September 19th, 2007 10:19 amI have just come back from overseas and visited a Zara shop in Greece. The clothes are just wonderful. I wanted to buy out the whole shop and the prices were very reasonable. Zara should definitely open at the Chadstone Shopping Centre.
Posted by: Helen at September 19th, 2007 10:20 amYou made my day!!! Posted by: Faye at September 19th, 2007 10:52 amFinally! I am so excited about this!
But the hitlist for other stores includes..
H&M - Celebs shop here.. need I say more?
Topshop - For their personal styling services + new trends by the second they are off the catwalk.
Oh and they would all give Sportsgirl + Co a run for their money in the quality for a price stakes!
Posted by: Christine-Louise at September 19th, 2007 10:58 amis this where i enter the competition?
Posted by: Alana Coghlan at September 19th, 2007 11:03 ami really want h&m to open up in Australia!
This is a store that definitely should come to Sydney and other States in Australia. In Spain - a fantastic store.
Posted by: regina at September 19th, 2007 11:08 amTopshop from the UK, Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters from the states. After converting to Aussie dollars and postage costs, it’s not really worth buying online..

I have been raving to all my friends about Zara and cant believe finally it’ll be here and I can show them what Ive been going on about for ever… and Bondi Junction, It cant get any better! If your after another store that needs to make its was to Aus it would have to be Urban Outfitters.

How about H&M and River Island for more of those affordable, yet fashionable pieces, Gap for the best jeans and fantastic basics, Burton for great casuals, Next for great workwear, and you mentioned TopShop - if that ever happens, then you MUST include TopMan!
Posted by: Adam Rafferty at September 19th, 2007 12:04 pmZARA, ZARA, ZARA!!!!!! Chapel St Melbourne Oxford St Sydney both in need of some of the hot fashionable trends. A Zara store, what more could a femaile and male ask for!

Posted by: Debbie Galanos at September 19th, 2007 12:30 pmI just hope they’ll be as affordable here as they are over there.
Funilly enough I heard the rumour from a Zara store manager in Malta, and just this morning received a reply from my query to Zara. They say that they have no plans now or in the immediate future to open in Australia. Sadly, our loss.
Posted by: Rose at September 19th, 2007 12:32 pmChadstone - The Fashion Capital!
Posted by: tg at September 19th, 2007 12:35 pmThis is Yvette again just wanted to say great to see such a response and that I’m not the only Zara fanatic. Was hoping if it is possible to a get a special invite to their opening night?

Posted by: Antoinette D at September 19th, 2007 3:02 pmisnt chaddie thefashion capital so where else could a top store like zara be?
Posted by: marg at September 19th, 2007 3:05 pmAbout time Zara graced our shores, but why is it always Sydney first. Isn’t Melbourne Australia’s fashion capital? Melbourne CBD location would rock!
Posted by: Angela at September 19th, 2007 3:43 pmAnd if we could also get the other great spanish label - Mossimo Dutti I’d be in heaven.
H&M for sure!!!!!!
Posted by: zoe at September 19th, 2007 4:09 pmThat’s hot. I bet the Australian Designers are shitting themselves. I understood that this was the reason why Zara never came to Australia. It was because all the Australian Designers were worried that Zara would take over. The only disadvantage to Zara coming to Australia is that everyone will be wearing Zara (especially since it caters, for men, women and children) and it will probably be much more expensive here.
Posted by: FS at September 19th, 2007 4:56 pmJanan, I did the same thing!!!
You have no idea how happy this has made me!!
I too am obessessed about Zara, so much so that I named my cat after the label and have had occuring dreams about shopping at Zara but either I miss my flight or when I get there the shop is empty…… I know it’s crazy!
Sydney would be a prime spot, but I would be happy for Zara to open anywhere in Australia - just a short plane trip away instead of a gruelling 20 hour flight!
Posted by: Gina at September 19th, 2007 5:19 pmIt’s going to be one hell of a welcome home party!
oooHH! zara has to com to melbourne 1st!! hell yeh!
Posted by: chii at September 19th, 2007 5:32 pmi reckon topshop and h&m shud cum over here for sure!
This is fantastic news! Zara is one of my favourite chain store. Ive always had to have stock up on Zara whenever i visit Singapore so if i could bring any store to Australia it would DEFINATELY have to be Zara!
Posted by: Karen wong at September 19th, 2007 5:41 pmBanana Republic would be amazing its range would fit in beautifully, in Australia.
Posted by: connie at September 19th, 2007 6:17 pmZARA is my absolute love along with topshop! BOTH should definitely be at Chadstone!
Posted by: Vicky at September 19th, 2007 6:52 pmPlease please please bring Zara to Melbourne. We were just overseas and visited Zara in China, Paris, London and Vancouver! Love it and miss it since I’m from Canada. I saw a jacket there that was beautiful and should have bought it - I could have…if we had a shop here.
Posted by: Rebecca at September 19th, 2007 7:22 pmI hope the Zara thing is really going to happen. As early as November 2002 it was reported that Zara may open in Australia.
The shop I would LOVE to see here is H&M Hennes, even better than Top Shop IMHO.
Posted by: Susi Banks at September 19th, 2007 7:43 pmPlease please please bring H & M to Sydney!!
Posted by: Laura at September 19th, 2007 7:53 pmI went beserk there when in Europe in May & June, every city i went to i went to H & M!
I get asked all the time where i got my Madonna designed suit & shirt!!
I cant believe they don’t have a online store like Topshop do!! (oh & bring topshop as well).
Zara would be great… but I really want H & M!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my favourite shops in the states is Anthropolgie. They have amazing clothing, household items and books. A really unique chain of stores that would be fantastic for Australia.
Posted by: Christina Adler at September 19th, 2007 7:55 pmZara! About time, this will free up the retail industry in Australia and provide Australians with up to date fashions.
Sydney
Posted by: Marie Brennan at September 19th, 2007 8:16 pmThis news has completely made my day - I’ve been getting my Zara fix for the last few years in Europe and North America. Anthroplogie and Top Shop are my two other picks
Posted by: Stacey at September 19th, 2007 9:39 pmMy girlfriend just gave me the best news - Zara coming downunder! Our first dalliance was in New York last year. I just knew I had to be with Zara again! Last month we were reacquainted, in Bangkok. And now I hear we will be together again, albeit in Sydney. Can you get butterflies from a label??
Posted by: (Mr) Sunny B at September 19th, 2007 10:59 pmI would love it if Sephora would come to Australia - its my favourite shopping destination overseas, i love the experience of browsing amazing products from a variety of brands, you can spend hours in there!
Posted by: Anna at September 19th, 2007 11:00 pmTo janan yenice, post. Despite your emails about Zara, retail rights have long been held for Australia by Solomn Lew ex Coles-Myer Chairman.
Have to agree with all about H & M. Great clothes and even better prices.
Posted by: Al at September 19th, 2007 11:45 pmDEFINITELY ZARA (H&M a close second!!)THIS IS SO EXCITING!!
Posted by: Anna at September 20th, 2007 5:12 pmCant wait!!! Hope we get the stuff they get in Europe though!!!!
Posted by: Julianne Serhan at September 21st, 2007 9:14 amAnother store would be MOSSIMO DUTTI (hope i have spelt it right). This is also another great Spanish label.
Victoria’s Secret for sure, even South Africa has one. Why do we miss out??? But I love Zara as well. I got so much stuff when I was in Spain… mmm love…
Posted by: Rachelle Hume at September 21st, 2007 10:45 amTHIS IS THE BEST NEWS I HAVE HEARD IN - FOREVER!
I have emailed them so many times about on line shopping and coming to SYDNEY
SO HAPPY TO HEAR IT COULD HAPPEN!
YAY ! HAPPY SHOPPING!
Posted by: Kobe hayes at September 21st, 2007 11:16 pmZara
I would love this fashion to be located in Brisbane. Why because we are the next thing on the map. Show those Sydney and Melbourne people Brisbane is fashionable, too.
Posted by: Benita Wong at September 22nd, 2007 12:06 amNooooo! Dont bring Zara here!! Part of the excitement of travelling overseas is going to the fantastic stores that we dont have here and being able to buy something that noone else in Australia has!
Posted by: SM at September 22nd, 2007 12:43 pmFINALLY! I cant hardly wait, it wasn’t too long ago when i have discovered this label while shopping in Jakarta! I fell in love with their products and leaving me confused on why they had not yet reached Australia? Until now whenever i crave for Zara i had to board an 8hr long flight to either Singapore or Indonesia. I hope this news is for certain, as it certainly had brought my hopes up.
Posted by: Andy at September 23rd, 2007 12:42 amVery excited about Zara coming to our fair shores but would love to see Next and Victoria’s Secret in Sydney as well…It’s all about choice!
Posted by: Doriette McIvor-Stone at September 23rd, 2007 9:27 amSo exciting to hear the plans for an Aussie Zara store. Yay! (Tragic - Any idea on when it will be opening?)
Having lived in London for 3 years, I miss lots of European brands so would be great if they could bring more over to Oz!
I agree with so many of the brands everyone has suggested including Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins, River Island, Urban Outfitters and H & M.
Massimo Dutti, Bershka and Pull & Bear would be great too (especially since the company that owns them - the Inditex group - also owns Zara).
Some additions to the list:
* Oasis
* Reiss
* All Saints
I just hope that when Zara opens in Australia, the prices aren’t more inflated than just the exchange conversion from the euro to Aussie dollar (eg MNG prices are so much more than just the dollar conversion from the Euro).
And hopefully, they end up opening a Zara store in every state of Australia…then everyone will be happy =)
Posted by: Ann at September 24th, 2007 1:55 amTough choice, but on balance, considering price, quality, celeb endorsement factor and being 100 percent on-trend without being too fashion-slavish, my vote would have to go to H&M
Posted by: Catherine at September 26th, 2007 12:06 pmI love ZARA, I always shop at Zara in Athens GREECE every year, and now I can’t wait to shop at Zara Australia!
Posted by: Fonteine Panoutsos at September 26th, 2007 4:02 pmLooking forward to a great international fashion label soon in Aus!
Posted by: Mikella at September 26th, 2007 4:03 pmIm so excited about Zara coming to Australia because I shop at Zara in Athens Greece every year and now I can’t wait for the store to open here. I hope it’s Melbourne!
