As Sydney temperatures hit the mid 30s last week, I found myself struck with a serious case of coat envy. While I should be thinking of adding to my collection of LWT’s and which sublime Camilla Franks caftan to swan about in, I’m dreaming of a white Christmas and all the wonderful coats my northern hemisphere sisters in style are wrapping themselves in.

My condition has been building for sometime. Watching Just My Luck on DVD a couple of months ago, it soon became apparent the 2006 film’s saving grace was Lindsay Lohan’s array of luscious coats during her lucky phase. The delicious white shawl-collared number is a particular favourite for the way it envelopes her tiny frame while still revealing her waist.

Also contributing to my unseasonable coat lust are the happy snaps of well-heeled show-goers at the international collections and the release of Aquascutum Vintage. Cleverly, the Brit-brand has looked back to outerwear favoured by stars of the silver screen to develop a five coat collection incorporating classic styling in modern fabrications. I just hope some of the Australian fashion chains are taking notice.

Then there’s net-a-porter.com to drool over. Seriously, I’m talking pages and pages of pea coats, swing coats, satin evening coats, trenches, officer’s coats, bell-sleeve coats, DB coats, trapeze coats, babydoll coats (who knew?), funnel-neck coats, sequinned coats, wrap coats, frock coats, cape coats, brocade coats, SB coats, shearling coats, rain coats and, well, you get the pretty picture.

I just know the Sonia by Sonia Rykiel black-and-navy wool single-breasted coat would be something I’d adore forever. And that sunny yellow Milly double-breasted wool coat with gold buttons would brighten up any chilly morning, not to mention look amazing over the array of Little Black Dresses we’re all going to be habitually wearing next season.

I can just imagine women in cold climes do this with bikinis, jewelled thongs (that’s the footwear version for those who usually say flip-flops) and wispy dresses for dancing tropical nights away in. What a topsy turvy world we live in.

Meanwhile I’ll be attending Rosemount Australian Fashion Week Transeasonal collections in Sydney this week in the hope I might spy a coat or two to add to my wardrobe next winter.

So, what out-of-season pieces are you in lust with?
