New year, new you… You know the drill. Time to make resolutions about fresh trends to try and old favourites to mothball. Here’s the ultra optimistic, anguish free guide. Let’s go shopping!

* Body-con knit dresses will be everywhere this year so buy now and reap the rewards of getting in early. Ok, I’ll admit these can be as scary as they sound but choose a dark shade in a heavy knit, team it with the appropriate shapewear (one of those seamless tubes from chest to thigh is ideal), step into some killer heels and emulate the posture of a pilates guru. BTW, Country Road has a mad version for under $200 in sizes 6 to 16. Give it a whirl.

* Those smocks and babydoll numbers from last year will make amazing maternity wear should you find yourself in the family way anytime soon. Otherwise, pack them away. Far away. And remember, if you still like a little room to move, replace them with one-shoulder caftans, Pucci-esque tunic tops and elegant long sheath dresses.

* Proper pants are seriously set to take on denim this year. Harem style, Capri length, sailor pants, cigarette slim, high waisted, wide legged, flat front, cuffed and pleated, you will only find the perfect pair for your shape and style with a little fortitude (and possibly a trip to the tailor post-purchase). Hit the change room and try them all. Who knows, you might be surprised. Just take care with knickerbockers: an under-26 trend for sure.

* Yes, you can keep those platforms on high rotation but only if they’re in decent nick. Otherwise, time for an upgrade. Patent is still big news and suede is figuring strongly too. Plum and grey make a change from black while metallics still look luxe. Also embrace the latest in flats: moccasins, loafers and driving shoes are the new ballerinas. But as long as the sun continues to shine, don’t give up on strappy leather flats. Gladiators toughen up a sundress while bejewelled versions work best with denim shorts or jeans.

* After seasons of cartoonish-tulip cuts, pencil skirts (a personal favourite in my world) are back on the radar. Go above the knee for a little hit of the 80s or just on/under (depending on your pins) for old-world style and a little longer still for the just-off-the-runway take. Everyone from Sportsgirl to Vivienne Westwood is doing them. Wear with a silk cami, blouse or knitted vest for grown-up glamour or dress your skirt down with a outsized T-shirt tucked in or belted to define the waist.
