It has the name of a patriot American and the face of a migrant Mexican. No, we’re not being politically incorrect, because this is American Apparel – a basics clothing line with a unique take on fashion manufacturing, distribution and advertising.
American Apparel might look simple – that’s because aesthetically it is. But the company’s clothing has long been created with a difference. AA’s ‘sweatshop free’ stance in particular was, until recently, something of a manufacturing abnormality. By declaring its workers’ rates of pay (25,000/yr), the company pushed to raise the standards of onshore American employment. Is also takes a blatant stand against the Government’s hardline stance on immigration, especially in LA where the company’s manufacturing headquarters are based.
You can jump online to see AA’s faces in action (which has converted its own share of controversy – but that’s for another post) as well as browse the store’s stock of singlets, bodysuits, leggings, hoodies, tees and dresses (the list is endless, and they have an Australia distribution point – heaven!). Once your shopping cart is full, feel good that you are supporting a multinational company that pays its employees their dues.
