Looking at the coverage of the recent haute couture collections in Paris and the current ready to wear season which has just kicked off in New York, I’ve decided there’s no better time to write one of those grandiose wishlists should I ever come into a fortune. Or find a bank that offers mortgages for dream wardrobes rather than the usual great Australian nightmare.
At the top, a Chanel tweed jacket, please. Karl Lagerfeld went to town with legions of luxe odes to this icon at his strangely youthful haute couture showing a couple of weeks ago (everything came with bandy legs and ballet flats). Besides, I’d just happened to open this month’s CLEO to see that radio host Jackie O has a very cute boxy Chanel jacket in creamy tweed. And she’s a regular girl. Apparently.
Next up, my true bespoke dream: the item I’ve never ceased longing for since I was 18 and fell seriously in love with fashion, a Yves Saint Laurent Le Smoking. Elegant, versatile and genuinely timeless, that’s what I’d want if I could ever have a piece of haute couture made for me. No frou frou gowns, just a bespoke killer tux. And a time machine to take me back to the days when Saint Laurent was at the helm of his atelier and would supervise his white-robed assistants during the fittings. Surely that’s not too much to ask for?
More realistic is a little loving from Roland Mouret. His razor-sharp dresses might be a wardrobe staple of Victoria Beckham but they’re supposed to be just as amazing with curves. And those I already have.
But why stop there? I’ll take an Hermes Birkin in orange calfskin with platinum hardware, a stainless steel Cartier Tank watch (the small one, thanks) and a Little Joe by Gail Elliott leather biker jacket. That’s not to say my cart is full yet. We haven’t even mentioned shoes. Endless Christian Louboutin pumps, Sergio Rossi sandals and Chloe boots in size 40 since you asked.
The good news of course is that designers at all levels share the very same obsessions and routinely bring us cheap(er) and cheerful incarnations we can all buy into.
So what’s on your wishlist?
